Discreet(TM), a division of Autodesk, Inc. (Nasdaq:ADSK), provider of leading-edge implements for the game development community, announced its theme for this year's Game Developers Conference (GDC), "You Are Player One." Discreet is unveiling two new products in its complete line of 3D game and animation tools: reactor(TM), the physics-integrated extension for 3ds max(TM) 4, and gmax(TM), the licensable game development platform and free consumer game-content editor based on 3ds max. reactor is an integrated physics extension for 3ds max 4 that realistically simulates cloth, fluid, soft and hard bodies, and rope. Expected to begin shipping in late spring 2001, reactor gives game developers the freedom to produce dynamic physics details and is powered by the award-winning physics engine created by Havok, Inc. (www.havok.com).

Show attendees can also check out gmax -- a game level-editing component introduced at GDC that offers game developers and consumers the ability to edit and extend their favorite levels and content through game packs.

Discreet recently announced a middleware agreement with Microsoft(R) for Xbox(TM) development. Discreet's technology will allow game development teams working on games for the Xbox to work in real time, resulting in a dramatic reduction in development time since games animated in 3ds max can be programmed directly for the Xbox.

Discreet is best known among game developers for its 3D animation software package, 3ds max, recently released in version four. Also among Discreet's line of game development tools are character studio, the 3D character animation system designed as an extension to 3ds max, and combustion(TM), a unified paint and 3D compositing, animation, and effects package.
