Discreet Logic introduces two new desktop-based virtual sets systems; new VAPOUR Preview and Design Station and FROST now support Silicon Graphics Indigo2 IMPACT desktop workstation.
With these announcements, Discreet Logic is offering virtual set technology to new markets on an affordable, resource-efficient platform. The company anticipates that the two systems will ship in Summer 1996.
The VAPOUR Preview and Design Station
The VAPOUR Preview and Design Station enables clients with multiple cameras to use the Indigo2 IMPACT workstations for preview of cameras in a live environment. Indigo2 IMPACT-class systems can now be used for design and pre-production.
The product provides off-line design tools for VAPOUR and FROST design, and also allows production use by providing non-broadcast quality camera preview for camera operators and directors. The Indigo2 IMPACT delivers the complete functionality of VAPOUR, including the ability to match the movement of real cameras. With the support for the Indigo2 IMPACT desktop workstation, multi-camera studios can implement a flexible mix of Onyx's and Indigo2 IMPACTs to implement a more flexible studio solution.
"Interest in leveraging virtual sets for design and pre-production has been gaining momentum as sophisticated producers see the possibilities," said Andy Johnston, vice president, Discreet Logic Strategic Systems. "Our system offers a realistic entry point or off-line station for broadcasters and post production facilities of all sizes to access the technology and experiment with their creativity."
FROST on Indigo2 IMPACT
FROST, the 3D visualization, character generation and data-driven graphics system on the Indigo2 IMPACT provides the full range of FROST features at an attractive price point to fit within any television station's graphics budget. FROST enables near real-time play-out of 3D graphics. In addition, FROST allows broadcasters to develop on-air graphic templates in a station-specific style and generate graphics using up to the minute data.
"The Indigo2 IMPACT systems will allow expanded capabilities to a broader segment of the market, offering clients access to powerful graphics-generating tools," Johnston continued. "FROST's capabilities have withstood the tests of high-pressure live broadcasts, and now we expect the new hardware platform to enable broadcasters to put multiple systems in use to differentiate the look and feel of their programming."
FROST has been utilized for a number of innovative broadcasts, including CBS News' Campaign `96 U.S. primary election coverage, Sendezenstrum Munchen's (SZM) Hugo Game Show (Germany), Premier TV's Academy Awards Telecast and Golden Globe Awards (Hamburg), and a number of others.
