But not all of the studies and information about supplements is good. Scores of orange foods contain beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant that converts to vitamin A in the body. Studies found that beta-carotene from nutritional sources reduced the hazard of cancer and heart disease, boosted immunity and supported good eyesight. Because of the impressive answers on this antioxidant, lots of dietary advisors began recommending it in supplement form. But, soon subsequent to that two first-rate studies showed that these supplements were in fact causing considerable damage. The studies tested people who were at a excessive risk for lung cancer, including asbestos industry workers, former smokers and smokers. The study was immediately discontinued when it found that in this higher risk group the ones that were taking the beta-carotene supplements were in fact showing a higher mortality rate and a higher rate of lung cancer than those that were given the placebo. Beta-carotene is plentiful in fruits and vegetables and it is safe and beneficial when received from foods. Ideally, the greatest way to get sustenance is from diet, though most of today''s diets do not offer adequate nourishment to retain health so nutritional supplementation in moderation can be the best answer. Blueberries, cranberries and grapes are all superior in antioxidants but it is being proven that the acai berry has more antioxidant activity than all of the others. |
