Disc die for blown film grows to 18 in. diam.


The modular disc blown film die was commercialized by BBS (1) (Bulletin Board System) A computer system used as an information source and forum for a particular interest group. They were widely used in the U.S.  Corp., Spartanburg, S.C., in the late 1990s in small sizes (up to 9 in. diam.), mostly for R&D applications. Now it has been scaled up to 18 in. diam. The larger die has 25 disc cells to make film with 25 microlayers from three extruders (two 65-mm, one 50-mm). Melt from each extruder is split in three for a total of nine melt flows, each directed through one of the 25 cells. Output is up to 800 lb/hr. A smaller 9-in., 25-layer die in BBS's lab is running trials with alternating microlayers (see microscope view below) of LDPE LDPE
