Speaker--Prof. Irvin Varkonyi

Adjunct Professor, Dept of Homeland Security, Transportation and Logistics Management, American Public University System 

Irvin Varkonyi will discuss Disaster Logistics at the 60th Annual NDTA and Expo in Memphis, September 23-27. Varkonyi has nearly three decades of experience in air transportation and logistics. He was most recently Sales Principal with responsibility for business development in third party logistics and order fulfillment with the DDD Company, Landover, Maryland. The organization provides outsourcing tools for government and commercial organizations, improving efficiency and reducing the cost of fulfillment. From 1994 until 2001, he was Manager, Government Project Development with Emery Worldwide at their Dulles Airport Government Sales Office. He earned the President's Award as team leader responsible for increasing the company's revenue by 400 percent under the Air Mobility Command's Civil Reserve Air Fleet entitlements in Emery's partnership with commercial carriers. Prior to joining Emery, Mr. Varkonyi was Vice President, Cargo Sales, the Americas, for Martinair Holland, a specialized niche operator based in the Netherlands. He earned the annual individual performance award for leading the top cargo sales unit of the global carrier. Mr. Varkonyi was on the team that negotiated the agreement which made Martinair the only foreign carrier to provide charter capacity to the Air Mobility Command during Operation Desert Storm. Mr. Varkonyi's airline career began with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines where he spent a decade in cargo sales and marketing, concluding his tenure as Assistant Regional Sales Manager for KLM's Eastern Region, based out of JFK Airport. He began his international career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal, West Africa. Assigned to a small village in the rural country, he coordinated self-help programs with outside resources to enable villagers to improve their living conditions. Mr. Varkonyi holds an MBA from the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird) in Glendale, Arizona and a BA in International Relations and Economics from Clark University in Worcester, Massachussets: He is a member and the Educational Chair of the National Capital Area Roundtable of CLM. He also holds membership and is the current chair of the Emergency Preparedness Committee of the Washington, DC Chapter of the NDTA.
