Disabled championships celebrate a quarter century.


THE RotaryWelsh Disabled Sports Disabled sports are sports played by persons with a disability, including physical and intellectual disabilities. As many of these based on existing sports modified to meet the needs of persons with a disability, they are sometimes referred to as adapted sports.  Team Championships (WDSTC) celebrated 25 years this year with some 100 disabled young people taking part in a variety of sports at the Cwmbran Stadium Cwmbran Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Cwmbran, Wales. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of Cwmbran Town F.C.. The stadium holds 7,877 people. .

The event is open to clubs throughout Wales working with people with a disability in a variety of ways, but with sport as one of their activities.

At this year's championships, teams took part in swimming, curling, table tennis, shot putt, pool, football, boccia (a paralympic ball game) and weight lifting weight lifting, international sport, also a training technique for athletes in other sports. From the earliest times men have lifted weights as a test of strength. . This year's winning team were from Saundersfoot.

Brian Griffiths (born 1968, Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK) is an artist based in London.
, together with the Lady Mayoress, were able to join us for several hours, as well as the Mayor and Mayoress of Torfaen and the Deputy Mayor and Consort of Newport.

Major Phil Packer, who recently walked the London Marathon, also came along to encourage our competitors and tell them about his quest to build a British Inspiration Support Organisation for young people with disability who are finding life hard to cope with.

The sports are organised by a small committee of Rotarians and funded by Rotary Clubs inWales.
