RICHARD Macdonald Mac·don·ald   , Sir John Alexander 1815-1891.

Canadian politician and the first prime minister of the Dominion of Canada (1867-1873 and 1878-1891). He is considered the organizer of the Canadian confederation, established in 1867.

 director general after more than a decade in the post.

He will remain in the position until towards the end of the year and the search for his successor is now starting.

Mr Macdonald said: "It is a huge privilege to hold this job and I have greatly enjoyed all of my some 13 years in post. However, I have decided the time has come to give a bit more time to my family and other interests and I hope also to find some fresh work challenges.

"My decision has been difficult to reach but it is entirely positive and I remain extremely committed to the NFU and farming - they are a huge part of my life."
