Diocese reassigns 21 priests; Clergy shortage means doubling up.

The following correction was published June 9, 2007:

Because of an editing error, a story in yesterday's Telegram & Gazette indicated that Monsignor Sullivan had stepped away from his work as chancellor and director of development while on leave.

WORCESTER - The Diocese of Worcester, in its continuing effort to deal with its shortage of clergy, is set to launch a major reorganization that will involve reassigning 21 priests.

Most of the plan, which will be announced today, kicks into operation June 30 and will affect some well-known priests who have held longtime parish assignments.

In the United States of America, Notre Dame  and Sacred Heart of Jesus, will be managed by the Rev. Leo-Paul LeBlanc.

Rev. Riddick, the pastor at St. Catherine's, will assume the same duties at Sacred Heart. Rev. LeBlanc, pastor at Notre Dame, will become "administrator" at Sacred Heart.

The diocese began twinning last year.

Though personnel changes are made throughout the year to deal with unforeseen circumstances, the chancery in June usually rotates several priests into new assignments.

This year's number, however, is unusually high.

"There's no question there are more changes this year," said Raymond L. Delisle, diocesan spokesman.

Officials said the shortage of priests was exacerbated because there were no ordinations this year.

There are about 150 priests in active ministry within the diocese, with about 16 serving elsewhere. The diocese has 126 parishes, not counting mission churches, and serves about 350,000 Catholics.

Priests getting new postings include the Rev. Michael P. Bafaro, a longtime activist in the city, who has been pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann since 1986. Rev. Bafaro will become a senior priest at Mount Carmel.

Other well-known names include the Rev. George O. Lange, who is retiring as pastor of St. Luke the Evangelist Luke the Evangelist (Hebrew: לוקא; Greek: Λουκᾶς Loukas) was an early Christian who is said by tradition to be the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the  Church in Westboro, and the Rev. Steven M. LaBaire, the parish's associate pastor, who is moving to Uxbridge.

Those two priests found themselves immersed in controversy in 2005 when they stated in their parish's bulletin that they did not support the proposed amendment to ban same-sex marriages in Massachusetts, a stance opposing that of the state's Catholic bishops.

Rev. Lange will retire and live at the Southgate retirement community in Shrewsbury; Rev. Labaire will become the pastor at St. Mary's in Uxbridge.

Rev. Labaire's appointment will also fill a void created when the Rev. Paul Doherty was removed from his duties last year, after he confided to church officials that he had "inappropriate sex" with a minor about 30 years ago.

The Rev. Rocco Piccolomini, temporary administrator at Our Lady of Loreto, will become pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann. He will continue to be director of priest personnel, though he will no longer serve as secretary to the bishop. Mr. Delisle said that position will be filled by a lay person at the chancery.

The Rev. Henry A. Donoghue, pastor at St. George since 1993, will become a senior priest at Blessed Sacrament, and the Rev. Ronald Falco, pastor at St. Anna in Leominster since 1995, will become pastor at St. George.

The Rev. James B. Callahan, pastor of Sacred Heart in Worcester, will become pastor at St. Anna.
