Dinosaur fossil tiles: early childhood.

The Art Problem

Create a simulated fossil using toy plastic dinosaurs and clay.

Materials

clay, cut into slabs about 4 x 5" (10 x 13 cm) and 1 " (2.5 cm) thick; small plastic dinosaurs, at least three per table; shells; water; wet paper towels for cleanup.

Procedures

Ask students: What are dinosaurs? What does it mean to say they are extinct? How do we know dinosaurs once existed? What are fossils? How were they made? Explain that our knowledge about dinosaurs comes from fossilized fos·sil·ize

Distribute clay and plastic dinosaurs. Tell students to let their dinosaurs "fall over" on their sides in the clay. Encourage them to push hard enough to make a good impression without flattening

the clay too much. Suggest that they also use shells to make impressions. Students can rub a little water into their clay if it begins to crack. Let the fossil tiles dry, and then fire them if using real clay. They can be left unglazed and rough to look like real fossils or glazed glaze

Assessing Learning

Can students correctly explain the meaning of the terms dinosaur, extinct, and fossil? Can they accurately explain how fossils were made?
