Two Eugene beers win

gold medals in Denver

Two Eugene brewers, West Brothers Brewery and Wild Duck Brewery & Restaurant, were among five Oregon breweries that received gold medals in the Association of Brewers' Great American Beer Festival The Great American Beer Festival (GABF) is a three-day annual event hosted by the Brewers Association held at the end of September or the beginning of October in Denver, Colorado. , Sept. 25-27 in Denver, Colo.

West Brothers Brewery won gold in the Coffee-Flavored Beer category with its Up All Night Espresso Stout.

The Wild Duck Brewery took the gold medal in the Barley Wine-Style Ale category with its Auld auld

The other gold medal winners from Oregon were the Widmer Brothers Brewing Co. of Portland (Widmer Blonde Ale Blonde ales, also called golden ales range in color from that of straw to golden blond(e). They are clear, crisp, and dry, with low-to-medium bitterness and aroma from hops, and some sweetness from malt. ) in the Golden or Blonde Ale category, Deschutes Brewery Gary Fish established the Deschutes Brewery & Public House as small brew pub in 1988 in downtown Bend, Oregon and named it after the wild & scenic Deschutes River. The brewery expanded in 1993 and now has a brewing facility with two brew houses so it can brew enough beer to  of Bend (Deschutes Summer Seasonal) in the Bitter category, and Alameda Brewhouse Brew´house`

The competition drew more than 2,000 entries from 393 breweries. The gold, silver and bronze medal winners in 65 categories are listed on the Web at www.beertown.org.

Firehouse Restaurant

wins chowder chowder, stew of fish or shellfish with potatoes, onions, and pork (usually salt pork), thickened with crumbled hard bread. The name chowder seems to have originated from the French word chaudière  contest

The Firehouse Restaurant, on Bay Street in Florence, placed first in the professional chowder competition held Sept. 27 during the Chowder Blues & Brews Festival in Florence.

The Baked Alaska Soup Company of Astoria placed second, and LeRoy's Blue Whale of Yachats placed third. Eleven coastal restaurants participated in the competition.

The Red Lion Hotel in Coos Bay received the People's Choice Award for its chowder.
