Firehouse Restaurant wins chowder chowder, stew of fish or shellfish with potatoes, onions, and pork (usually salt pork), thickened with crumbled hard bread. The name chowder seems to have originated from the French word chaudière contest The Firehouse Restaurant, on Bay Street in Florence, placed first in the professional chowder competition held Sept. 27 during the Chowder Blues & Brews Festival in Florence. The Baked Alaska Soup Company of Astoria placed second, and LeRoy's Blue Whale of Yachats placed third. Eleven coastal restaurants participated in the competition.
