DILL dill, Old World annual or biennial plant (Anethum graveolens) of the family Umbelliferae (parsley family), cultivated since at least since 400 B.C. The pungent, aromatic leaves and seeds are used for pickling and for flavoring sauces, salads, and soups. Dill water (a carminative) and oil of dill are made from the seeds. Dill's selection of mariner lore offers history as well as anecdotes about famous sailors, from John Paul Jones and Herman Melville's Captain Ahab 1.) Ahab was one of the greatest kings of the northern kingdom. He consolidated the good foreign relations his father had fostered, and Israel was at peace during much of his reign. His marriage with Jezebel helped his friendship with Tyre, and his alliance with Jehoshaphat (1,) king of Judah, made Ahab sure of his less powerful neighbor to the south. to pirate Henry Morgan and Captain William Dampier, who circumnavigated the globe. Adventure stories include the sailing of a U-boat during WW II, a steamboat race, Viking navigators, and legends of mermaids. Interspersed are straightforward commentary, sketches, and photos of such subjects as the Gulf Stream Gulf Stream, warm ocean current of the N Atlantic Ocean, off E North America. It was first described (1513) by Spanish explorer Ponce de León. The Gulf Stream originates in the Gulf of Mexico and, as the Florida Current, passes through the Straits of Florida and along the coast of SE United States with a breadth of c.50 mi (80 km)., chronometry, nautical terms, a seagoing grace before meals, extreme weather, parts of a bosun's pipe, and manmade icebergs.
