Digital bar code bead label identifies tire inventory.

As the proliferation of tire designs and styles continues, manufacturers are faced with additional complexities in the identification and management of manufacturing inventories. Since the 1980s, tire manufacturers have utilized bar code technology to automate automobile and truck tire identification and inventory management. One option for inventory identification is RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) A data collection technology that uses electronic tags for storing data. The tag, also known as an "electronic label," "transponder" or "code plate," is made up of an RFID chip attached to an antenna.  (radio frequency identification See RFID.  technology). However, the tire manufacturing environment is said to warrant a unique set of performance requirements that cannot be effectively delivered through RF identification at this time.

Tire manufacturing is a hostile environment See: operational environment.  for traditional bar code labeling systems. The physical requirements of the label must withstand the harsh effects of the vulcanization vulcanization (vŭl'kənəzā`shən), treatment of rubber to give it certain qualities, e.g., strength, elasticity, and resistance to solvents, and to render it impervious to moderate heat and cold.  process, must adhere to adhere to

Research and engineering teams worked to develop a labeling system that would provide a bar code label that will follow the tire through the entire production processing, beginning as a piece of green rubber, through vulcanization, finishing, inspection and sorting; prove durable and resistant to abrasion abrasion /abra·sion/ (ah-bra´zhun)

This firm not only developed a customized permanent adhesive formulation that would fuse with the tire during the manufacturing processes, but it also developed a patterned adhesive label An adhesive label is a small piece of paper designed to be affixed to another larger piece of paper or other object, typically by the action of a layer of adhesive on the back of the label.  that could be easily removed from the finished tire by the dealer or installer who mounts the tire on the vehicle. The company was able to provide the solution without compromising the durability, accuracy and first scan readability of the label, said to be the ultimate solution for the manufacturer. The system's proprietary adhesive is said to bond well to green rubber and vulcanizes with the tire.
