Digital announces AltaVista Mail -- a powerful, low-cost Internet mail solution; Software provides easy-to-manage mail server for Internet users; available to download for 60-day trial.


MAYNARD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 1996--Digital Equipment Corporation today announced its AltaVista Mail server software, the first in a new line of AltaVista software products.

Featuring built-in connectivity to the Internet, AltaVista Mail provides departments and small enterprises with powerful, low-cost Internet mail See Internet e-mail service.  capabilities that can be added to a web server or existing electronic mail software - including the ability to mail multimedia documents over the Internet.

AltaVista Mail integrates seamlessly with enterprise mail systems such as Microsoft Exchange Messaging and groupware software for Windows from Microsoft. Exchange Server is an Internet-compliant e-mail system that runs under Windows NT/2000 and Windows Server 2003. It can be accessed by Web browsers, the Exchange client, versions of Outlook and the earlier Windows Inbox. . When used with the optional Internet Connector for Microsoft Exchange, AltaVista Mail provides the capability to launch applications for viewing documents attached to messages by simply clicking. Digital and its partners provide gateways and connectors to enable the same interoperability between AltaVista Mail and Lotus Notes Messaging and groupware software from IBM Lotus that was introduced in 1989 for OS/2 and later expanded to Windows, Mac, Unix, NetWare, AS/400 and S/390. Notes provides e-mail, document sharing, workflow, group discussions and calendaring and scheduling. . Digital's ALL-IN-1 and MAILWorks products can be connected in a similar manner.

AltaVista Mail incorporates open Internet standards, ensuring communication and interoperability within an organization and beyond. Digital will extend AltaVista Mail by seamlessly connecting popular e-mail systems such as IBM/Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail to the Internet.

Easy to Setup, Configure and Manage

"The AltaVista Mail software is suitable for non-expert environments because it is easy and intuitive to setup and configure," said Jeanette Horan, vice president of product development for Digital's Internet Software Business Unit. "You do not need to be a mail expert to administer the product. During testing many customers had the mail service up and running in minutes, saving time and money."

AltaVista Mail setup and administration is intuitive and is easily performed locally or remotely using a web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you. . A Windows management interface (Microsoft, system management) Windows Management Interface - (WMI) Microsoft's implementation of Web-Based Enterprise Management, a DMTF initiative to establish standards for accessing and sharing system management information over an enterprise network.  is available as an alternative to using a browser. Users can modify their password or redirect their mail using either method.

AltaVista Mail supports a full range of popular Internet e-mail clients, including the Microsoft Exchange Windows 95 client, Netscape Navigator V2.0 mail client, Network Computing Devices (company) Network Computing Devices - (NCD) Producer of X terminals, PC-Xware and Z-Mail.

Secure and Reliable

AltaVista Mail includes built-in features to detect and report suspicious events. A security operations log runs continuously and notifies the system manager of irregularities. The AltaVista Mail server can be used in conjunction with many firewall and tunnel products, including AltaVista Firewall and AltaVista Tunnel.

AltaVista Mail is priced at $495 per server and is available today. The product runs on Windows NT (Intel and Alpha) platforms. There is no per-client license required. A 60-day trial version of the product can be downloaded from http://www.altavista.software. digital.com.
