A byte out of crime

The murders of Matthew Shepard Matthew Wayne Shepard (December 1, 1976 – October 12, 1998) was an American student at the University of Wyoming who was fatally attacked near Laramie, on the night of October 6 – October 7, 1998 in what was widely reported by international news media as a savage  and Billy Jack Gaither have brought much-needed attention to the issue of hate crimes. Listen to some of the debate in Congress, though, and it's clear that many lawmakers still haven't gotten the message. This only underscores the importance that each hate crime committed against a gay man or lesbian be reported.
