Digital technology made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival Cannes Film Festival

Film festival held annually in Cannes, France. First held in 1946 for the recognition of artistic achievement, the festival came to provide a rendezvous for those interested in the art and influence of the movies.
. The technology is expected to replace film reels with satellites that would directly beam films into theaters, making it possible for one film to be simultaneously transmitted to thousands of cinemas worldwide.

The switch to digital would mean long-term savings for the studios. It is estimated that Hollywood spends over $625 million annually on reproducing and shipping "celluloid celluloid [from cellulose], transparent, colorless synthetic plastic made by treating cellulose nitrate with camphor and alcohol. Celluloid was the first important synthetic plastic and was widely used as a substitute for more expensive substances, such as " prints around the world. With digital technology, the costs could be cut to an approximated $12 million per year, so long as cinemas were digital friendly.
