In addition to 24 x 7 x 365 on-site personnel, back up and disaster recovery systems, Digital Island's 77,000-square-foot Silicon Valley data center features:
- Connections to the commercial electrical power grid via two
separate lines from two different power sources.
- Three 1,250 kW generators, supported by dual 750Kva UPS units.
- Redundant computer HVAC units, supported by three redundant
270-ton air-cooled chillers.
- Seismically braced structure in accordance with Essential
Facilities status.
- Dual Level secured access with Biometrics Readers.
- Single Entry Man trap system.
- Video camera surveillance with worldwide monitoring
capabilities.
- Enterprise storage and tape backup systems.
In terms of overall capability, Digital Island's Silicon Valley
data center has:
- Three chillers, each at 270 tons of refrigeration capacity, or
enough cooling for over 1,600 residential refrigerators. The
chillers can cool 4,300 gallons of boiling water to ice in one
hour.
- The three chilled water pumps, with one as standby, each
running at 600 gallons per minute, circulate enough water to
fill a standard bathtub in less than 20 seconds.
- Special computer-room air-conditioning units produce over
300,000 cubic feet per minute of conditioned air. This is
enough to fill up the Goodyear blimp in less than two minutes.
If that air flow was directed down an average corridor, the
wind speed would be almost 80 miles per hour - only slightly
lower than the landing stall speed of an F-4 Phantom fighter
jet.
- In an average day, the 25 computer-room air-conditioning units
will flash boil 4,000 pounds of water for humidification. This
is the average amount 1,000 people drink in a day, or enough
for 8,500 cups of coffee.
- The emergency generator plant can provide more than 200,000
kilowatt-hours of energy. With this much power, you could run
200 average homes for one month.
