Digi-Data Fibre Sabre 2300 RAID System Delivers More Than 160 MB/second Sustained Performance with Seagate Disks.

Business Editors/Hi-Tech Writers

JESSUP, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 29, 2001

Digi-Data Corporation has begun delivery of its new Fibre Sabre 2300 Family of RAID Systems, which deliver data from disks at a sustained rate over 160 megabytes per second (unit) megabytes per second - (MBps, MB/s) Millions of bytes per second. A unit of data rate. 1 MB/s = 1,000,000 bytes per second (not 1,048,576). .

The principal components of these new Fibre Channel RAID Systems are Digi-Data's new Fibre Sabre 2300 RAID controller A disk controller card that supports one or more RAID configurations. Originally only for SCSI drives, RAID controllers have become very popular for PATA and SATA drives. See RAID.  and Seagate Technology's high performance disk drives. The Fibre Sabre RAID controller complements its 2-gigabit per second Fibre Channel host interface with a powerful internal memory architecture.

Seagate's 10,000 RPM and 15,000 RPM Cheetah disk drives provide the power to support the high system throughput rate Throughput rate is an obsolete term[1] in the terminology of automated chemical analysis. It may mean either:

The combination of Digi-Data's RAID technology and Seagate's disk drives technology provides the high levels of performance, data availability Refers to the degree to which data can be instantly accessed. The term is mostly associated with service levels that are set up either by the internal IT organization or that may be guaranteed by a third party datacenter or storage provider. , and configuration options to support demanding storage requirements in direct attached and Storage Area Network configurations.

Performance

Digi-Data's Fibre Sabre 2300 RAID systems employ a unique internal architecture that uses six disk channels to read from or write to multiple disks simultaneously. Using Seagate's high performance 10000 and 15000 RPM Cheetah disks, the Fibre Sabre 2300 delivers more than 160 MB/second sustained throughput from disks even in entry level configurations with 5 disks (4 data disks and 1 parity disk).

With the RAID system's special hardware parity generation circuit and the disk caching capabilities of the Seagate disks, the Fibre Sabre 2300 RAID System also provides very high disk write speeds to support applications like video recording and real-time data Real-time data denotes information that is delivered immediately after collection. Reliability/Data Integrity

To complement the Seagate drives' exceptional reliability, Fibre Sabre 2300 provides additional RAID features like automatic detection of failed power supplies and fans with hot swappable See hot swap.  replacement. In addition, Digi-Data Fibre Sabre 2300 RAID Systems offer advanced data integrity features such as real-time hardware regeneration of lost data and global hot spare disks that provide additional protection.

Configurability

Using Seagate disks that range in size from 18 GB to the industry-leading Barracuda barracuda, slender, elongated fish of tropical seas. Barracudas have long snouts and projecting lower jaws armed with large, sharp-edged teeth. They are ferocious, striking at anything that gleams, and are considered excellent game fishes.  181 GB disk drive, Digi-Data Fibre Sabre 2300 RAID System configurations range from small systems providing 72GB of usable disk space to large arrays providing over 10 TB of usable disk space.

With its fiber optic interface, Fibre Sabre 2300 RAID Systems connect to Fibre Channel switches Major manufacturers of Fibre Channel switches are: Brocade, Cisco, McData and Qlogic.
  • Brocade:
  • Switches: 5000, 4900, 2400, 2800, 3800, 3900, 4100, 200E
  • Directors: 12000, 24000 and 48000
and hubs in switched fabric SAN environments, or directly to host computers with Fibre Channel interfaces.

"With the capabilities of the Seagate disk drives, our Digi-Data Fibre Sabre 2300 RAID Systems can meet the highest performance and reliability requirements of challenging applications, such as video streaming See streaming video and video stream.  and broadcasting, image storage and management, and web hosting Making a Web site available on the Internet. Many ISPs host a few personal Web pages for an individual at no additional cost above the monthly service fee, but the address is subordinate to the ISP; for example, www.friendlyisp.com/pat_smith. ," said Dr. Tomlinson Rauscher, President of Digi-Data. "These systems can even sustain more than 160 MB/second over much of the surface on Seagate's new 181 GB Barracuda disks."

"With the enormous demands being made on storage systems today, it is important that they be able to deliver ever faster transactions as well as incorporate reliability that can withstand 24 by 7 by forever environments. By incorporating Seagate's enterprise class Cheetah and Barracuda disc drives, Digi-Data's RAID solutions provide a compelling choice for its customers," said Henry Fabian, Seagate director, disc drive product marketing.
