Digger needed for historic search.


ARCHAEOLOGISTS working at a South Wales South Wales south nsud m du Pays de Galles  dig have issued an appeal for anyone with a mechanical digger to help them out.

The Cardiff University academics only have until next Thursday to complete their dig at Cosmeston Medieval Village Cosmeston Medieval Village is a "living history" village in the Vale of Glamorgan near Penarth and Cardiff in south Wales. Based upon remains discovered during a 1980s archaeological dig in the grounds of Cosmeston Park, it is a re-creation of 14th century peasant life. , Sully.

Professor John Hines, the director of the dig, said: "If we can't find a willing volunteer with a digger, we will have to end our archaeological explorations early so that we can fill in the trenches using spades. It will be such a shame."

The archaeologists and students have cut two long trenches across part of the village to explore the extent, depth and complexity of the remains of the medieval manor house Cosmeston Castle.

The dig has revealed the walls and floors of buildings belonging to the manor, and a fascinating collection of artefacts, including gaming pieces and a Nine Men's Morris See Morris.

A spokeswoman for the dig said: "The Events Field has to be returned to full working order for the big Medieval Fair in the village over August Bank Holiday.

"They would be delighted to hear from anyone who might be able to help them out. If so, please contact the site directly on 029 2070 9141, or come and see them."
