Difficult choice must be made; VIEWPOINTS.AS a parent with a child at Ysgol Treganna, I really sympathise with the parents at Lansdowne School, and understand why they want to oppose the closure of the school. However, the fact remains that difficult decisions have to be made about the education system in Canton. About half the school places at Radnor and Lansdowne Primary Schools are either empty, or taken up by children from outside their catchment area catchment area or drainage basin, area drained by a stream or other body of water. The limits of a given catchment area are the heights of land—often called drainage divides, or watersheds—separating it from neighboring drainage . At the same time, parents in Canton, many of whom live only a few streets away from Ysgol Treganna, are unable to get places in Welsh-medium education in Canton for their children. Furthermore, Ysgol Treganna is overcrowded o·ver·crowd v. o·ver·crowd·ed, o·ver·crowd·ing, o·ver·crowds v.tr. To cause to be excessively crowded: a system of consolidation that only overcrowded the classrooms. and not fit for purpose. Building a new smaller school for Lansdowne was put forward as a compromise option, but was turned down by Lansdowne parents. The only choice remaining is either to move Treganna to the Lansdowne site, or to see children in Canton in Welsh-medium education educated in cramped conditions for years to come, or not educated in Canton at all. The latter choice is completely unacceptable, which is why I support the council's decision to move forward with the school reorganisation programme. Simon Brooks Victoria Park Road East Canton, Cardiff Canton (Welsh: Treganna) is an inner-city area of west Cardiff, Wales. The name (from "St. Canna's Town") refers to the 6th century female saint after whom Pontcanna is also named. |
