Differing views on the war.It seems as though the politicians did not learn a thing from the Vietnam War. They stuck their noses in and got 66,000 Americans killed, and now they are trying to run the war in Iraq with the journalists' help. Let the Secretary of Defense and the generals do their job! Robert D. Vance, Abingdon, VA The war in Iraq is costing us $5 billion each and every month! I cannot accept the fact that we are sending billions of dollars overseas as foreign aid so that these countries who receive this money can build new roads, schools and better bridges. These funds should be frozen and re-directed to veterans health care. For year 2005, there is a budget shortfall of $1 billion for veterans health care and VA Secretary R. James Nicholson acknowledged that the deficit will be even larger at $2.6 billion for 2006. It was disclosed that the VA budget staffers underestimated the number of veterans returning from Iraq and Afganistan who will be entering the health care system along with all the veterans from all wars. How can the Congress provide foreign nations with all the money they need while turning a blind eye on the critically important needs of our veterans? George Fisher, Palm Beach, FL |
