This eye-opening book takes a look at mental illness and the toll it takes on teens. Chris is a high school senior looking forward to graduation, an aspiring writer with a prestigious college scholarship waiting for her. She is experiencing a budding budding, type of grafting in which a plant bud is inserted under the bark of the stock (usually not more than a year old). It is best done when the bark will peel easily and the buds are mature, as in spring, late summer, or early autumn.  romance with one of her closest friends, Jack. Chris and her best friend, Danelle, are closer than they've ever been. One evening, Chris and Danelle hang stickers that look like stars on both of their ceilings. This way they can both look up at them at night and feel close to each other. Danelle tells Chris that if she ever gets tired of the stars she can take them down, claiming that they aren't permanent. Their symbolic bond of friendship foreshadows what soon happens to their lives. Danelle begins acting strangely, running away from home, refusing to go to school, experiencing wild mood swings. Her behavior becomes dangerous and Chris is afraid that she is experimenting with drugs. Feeling hopeless, but determined to help, Chris allows herself to get sucked into the depression that has taken over Danelle. Jack watches as the drama unfolds and tries to keep Chris from drowning drowning /drown·ing/ (droun´ing) suffocation and death resulting from filling of the lungs with water or other substance.
