Steinfels (born in 1941) is an American journalist and educator best known for his writings on religious topics. A native of Chicago, Illinois, and a lifelong Catholic, Steinfels earned his PhD from Columbia University and joined the staff of the journal refers to one of Deedy's books, Auden as Didymus, which "delved into the columns that W. H. Auden wrote for Commonweal com·mon·weal n. 1. The public good or welfare. 2. Archaic A commonwealth or republic. Noun 1. in the 1940s under the pen name Didymus (the Good Thief Good Thief or Penitent Thief, in the New Testament, the malefactor crucified with Jesus who did not revile Him; Jesus promised him Paradise that day. In the Roman martyrology his feast is Mar. 25. )." The Good Thief was St. Dismas. Didymus is a name for Thomas, the Apostle who doubted our Lord.
