SUPER CITY

Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal Curated by Douglas Coupland, the prophet of 'Generation X', this show explores ideals of the contemporary city as played out through construction kits for children. His thesis is that childhood experiences and visions of the world condition adult choices; clearly some architects were allowed to play with Meccano longer than might reasonably be thought healthy.

A ROYAL EXHIBITION

Netherlands Architecture Institute, Rotterdam Patriotic show of contemporary Dutch architecture to coincide with and celebrate the silver jubilee of Queen Beatrix Beatrix (bē`ətrĭks, bē-ă`trĭks), 1938–, queen of the Netherlands. The oldest daughter of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, she received a law degree from the Univ. of Leyden (1961).. Includes work by Koen van Velsen Velsen (vĕl`sən), city (1994 pop. 63,617), North Holland prov., W Netherlands, near the mouth of the North Sea Canal. It includes the port of IJmuiden. Paper is a major manufacture, and agriculture (dairying, cattle, fruit, vegetables, flowers) is important., Sjoerd Soeters, Wiel Arets and Atelier Pro, among others.

Major retrospective of the Irish designer who infused the industrial aesthetic of Modernism with opulence and sensuality. Her Bibendum chair and E-1017 table--designed for her sister to enjoy breakfast in bed--are among the most enduring examples of early twentieth century furniture.

JULIUS SHULMAN, MODERNITY AND THE METROPOLIS

Exhibition celebrating Shulman's 95th birthday and announcing the Getty Research Institute's acquisition of his archive consisting of more than 260 000 prints, negatives and transparencies, a stunning visual record of modern architecture modern architecture, new architectural style that emerged in many Western countries in the decade after World War I. It was based on the "rational" use of modern materials, the principles of functionalist planning, and the rejection of historical precedent and ornament. This style has been generally designated as modern, although the labels International style, Neue Sachlichkeit, and functionalism have also been used. and Los Angeles.
