World's Largest Walnut Processor Anticipates Increased Consumer

Demand For Cholesterol-Reducing, Protein-Packed,

Cancer-Fighting, Omega-3 Filled Walnuts

STOCKTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 4, 2000

On the heels of a new study announcing growing evidence that walnuts help lower cholesterol, published in The Annals of Internal Medicine Annals of Internal Medicine (Ann Intern Med) is an academic medical journal published by the American College of Physicians (ACP). It publishes research articles and reviews in the area of internal medicine. Its current editor is Harold C. Sox. , April 2000, grower cooperative Diamond of California, the world's largest processor of walnuts, announced today a new operational capability to support an increase in consumer demand of the "wonder food."

Diamond of California this week completed upgrading its packaging lines which coincides with good news on walnuts and their contribution to better health.

The new study, conducted by researchers at California's Loma Linda University Founded in 1905, Loma Linda University (LLU) is a private, Christian, coeducational, health sciences university located in Southern California 60 miles east of Los Angeles close to San Bernardino and near beaches, mountains, and the desert.  and the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, indicates that all it takes is a handful of walnuts a day to achieve cholesterol-lowering results. Furthermore, researchers concluded that walnuts are easily included in a healthy diet by sprinkling them on salads, snacks or desserts.

The new $1.5 million packaging room upgrade allows for easier, more flexible production of walnuts. Single ounce to 5-pound bags of walnuts will be produced more efficiently because the new packaging lines will allow greater flexibility in generating different sizes and quantities to fulfill individual trade customer requests. The upgrade also allows for resealable packaging on 2-pound bags and larger for bulk buyers at club stores and for the food service arena.
