Under the agreement, Diamond will bundle TAIS DPD's DVD-ROM drives in multimedia kits for the commercial distribution and retail channels. TAIS DPD's DVD-ROM drives, in conjunction with Diamond's PCI-based adapters featuring decoders for MPEG-2 video and Dolby AC-3 digital audio, will allow consumers to experience exciting new DVD-based entertainment content on their PCs. Diamond Multimedia's first retail DVD-ROM products are expected to ship in early 1997 and will be showcased for the first time at the Comdex tradeshow in Las Vegas in booth No. L882.

"As a leading provider of graphics and video subsystems as well as multimedia kits, DVD-based PC products, which are video and graphics centric, are a logical extension for Diamond Multimedia," said Bill Schroeder, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , Diamond Multimedia Systems, Inc. "Through our partnership with TAIS DPD, one of the world's largest consumer electronics companies, Diamond intends to continue to be a leading solutions provider to the growing number of PC users waiting to upgrade to DVD."

"TAIS DPD has played the lead role in developing and defining the DVD standard for the next generation of multimedia content," said Ken Jones, director of DVD marketing for Toshiba America. "With Diamond Multimedia we have a strong partner with a very successful track record in distribution, sales and marketing of industry-leading multimedia hardware solutions."

Access Media International (AMI) projects that the majority of DVD-ROM hardware sales will come from upgrade kits through mid-1997, with sales estimated at $3.7 million in 1996 and growing to $194 million in 1997. By the year 2000, AMI predicts DVD-ROM hardware sales will reach $1.28 billion with an installed base of seven million units.

The introduction of DVD will benefit software publishers who can distribute multimedia titles on a single DVD-ROM disc instead of multiple CD-ROMs. Large numbers of content developers have expressed support for DVD-ROM, which will allow them to create video-, audio- and data-intensive entertainment and business applications at lower costs. DVD-ROM technology also provides high-speed data transfer, as well as other additional features and functionalities beyond the capabilities of CD-ROM drives.

According to a new research report from SIMBA Information Inc., Stamford, Conn., DVD-ROM software could generate revenues of $100 million annually by 1999 and will begin to take revenues away from CD-ROM beginning in 1997. The report, Multimedia Title Publishing 1996-97: Review, Trends & Forecast, estimates that DVD-ROM software sales will reach $35 million in 1997, $75 million in 1998 and $100 million by 1999.
