Diamond Head introduces ImageBASIC for DOCS Open.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 1997--AIIM--

ImageBASIC Toolkit and DOCS Imaging Source Code Enable PC DOCS

Developers to Create Customized Document Imaging Solutions

Diamond Head Software, Inc. announced today the availability of ImageBASIC for DOCS Open, an integrated suite of components that enable Visual Basic developers to customize DOCS Imaging. DOCS Imaging is the document imaging component in the DOCS Enterprise Suite from PC DOCS (NASDAQ NASDAQ

: PC DOCS), and extends the enterprise document management capabilities in DOCS Open to support digitized images.

Diamond Head developed DOCS Imaging for PC DOCS, using the ImageBASIC development environment. ImageBASIC for DOCS Open includes an integrated suite of ActiveX Controls A software module based on Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM) architecture. It enables a program to add functionality by calling ready-made components that blend in and appear as normal parts of the program.  and the source code to the DOCS Imaging application.

"Although compound document management (CDM 1. CDM - Content Data Model
2. CDM - Code Division Multiplexing
) products and services will form the basis for most corporate information management needs, they require seamless and robust image enabling to fulfill this requirement," said David Yockelson, vice president at META Group. "Diamond Head's ImageBASIC offers this integration via DOCS Imaging, enabling users to avail themselves of best-of-breed imaging services within their CDM environment."

ImageBASIC Suite of Components

To customize DOCS Imaging, developers will use the ImageBASIC suite that consists of ActiveX Controls for TWAIN (Technology Without An Interesting Name) A programming interface that lets a graphics application, such as an image editing program or desktop publishing program, activate a scanner, frame grabber or other image-capturing device.  scanning, TMSequoia Display and ScanFix Image Cleanup, Xerox TextBridge OCR OCR

For customized, high-volume capture systems for DOCS Open, developers can purchase ImageBASIC components that support more than 150 ISIS scanners. Developers can also purchase components for bar code, mark sense or handprint hand·print

recognition, plus extensive image and forms processing. Owners of Hewlett-Packard's new Network ScanJet 5 network scanner can take advantage of the integrated support Diamond Head has added in the forthcoming version of DOCS Imaging, providing additional distributed capture options.

Success Story at Large Accounting Firm

The first large-scale implementation of a customized version of DOCS Imaging was for one of the world's largest accounting firms. In conjunction with ICM ICM Intercom
ICM Integrated Crop Management
ICM International Congress of Mathematicians
ICM Information Classification and Management
ICM Intelligent Contact Management (Cisco)
ICM International Creative Management
(Integrated Computer Management), the PC DOCS premier integrator that was the prime contractor for this nationwide imaging/document management project and headquartered in Roseland, New Jersey, Diamond Head modified the DOCS Imaging application so the users saw and had access to only the functions they needed; scanning and OCR were removed. Custom bitmaps representing the standard accounting tick marks utilized by the firm, were integrated into the application as annotations which helped the accountants in their audit processing. Diamond Head and ICM also developed a custom capture system, which used bar codes for high volume batch processing (1) Performing a particular operation automatically on a group of files all at once rather than manually opening, editing and saving one file at a time. For example, graphics software that converts a selection of images from one format to another would be a batch processing utility.  and indexing into DOCS Open.

"The ImageBASIC toolkit for DOCS Open made it relatively easy for us to develop a customized solution that will be used by several thousand users located in dozens of sites of this accounting firm," said Mike Lucciola, president of ICM. "Using Diamond Head's superior technology, we were able to meet the customer's unique requirements for annotation and capture system, in a very compressed time frame." Diamond Head Offers New Storage Option Integrated with DOCS Open

ImageBASIC for DOCS Open also offers a powerful option for optical services. For the same installation, Diamond Head installed its new Tempest Optical Server which is tightly integrated with the security and indexing system of DOCS Open. Tempest is the only server on the market that can support the high-performance requirements and volume of concurrent users required for this installation. The Tempest Server is the ideal companion to DOCS Open systems.

The Industry Standard Development Environment

With the release of ImageBASIC for DOCS Open, Diamond Head has again proven its ability to quickly deliver integrated support for disparate hardware and software products from the industry's leading firms. The architecture of ImageBASIC 3.1 was designed to make such integration efforts very easy to accomplish.

"Once we added ImageBASIC integration for DOCS Open, the HP Network ScanJet 5 scanner took Diamond Head only a couple of months to accomplish," said Bill Burke, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Diamond Head. "For hardware manufacturers and software developers that are seeking the best development option to integrate imaging, and related technologies, with their hardware or vertical software applications, ImageBASIC provides a very compelling environment. With its proven record of successful, cooperative development relationships, Diamond Head has a strong case to make that ImageBASIC has become the industry standard development environment."

Pricing and Availability

The ActiveX Control suite to modify DOCS Imaging and the source code to the applications costs $5,000 and is available from Diamond Head's international channel of distributors and resellers or directly from Diamond Head. The 16-bit components of ImageBASIC for DOCS Open are available immediately, and run under Windows 3.x Windows 3.x can refer to either an individual or all of the following versions of Microsoft Windows:

  • Windows 3.1x
These should not be confused with the first three releases of Windows NT, which were also given "3.x" version numbers, i.e.
and Windows 95. The 32-bit version of ImageBASIC for DOCS Open will ship in the second quarter, shortly after PC DOCS ships the 32-bit version of DOCS Imaging.

ImageBASIC for DOCS Open will begin shipping in April. Several products developed using the new product suite will be demonstrated at the AIIM (Association for Information and Image Management International, Silver Spring, MD, www.aiim.org) A membership organization founded in 1943 devoted to creating industry standards and disseminating information about the document management industry.  booths of Diamond Head, PC DOCS and Plexus Plexus - A modular World-Wide Web server written in Perl by Tony Sanders <sanders@earth.com>.
