COLOMBIA Colombia (kəlŭm`bēə, Span. kōlōm`byä), officially Republic of Colombia, republic (2005 est. pop. 42,954,000), 439,735 sq mi (1,138,914 sq km), NW South America. Bogotá is the capital and largest city. APPEARS TO BE THE PERFECT MARKET FOR CELLULAR PHONES. ASIDE FROM THE usual appeal of convenience, there's the safety incentive. Colombia led the world in kidnappings last year, with more than 3,000 abductions.

Then how come Colombia's cell growth is holding nearly flat while the rest of the region goes wireless? Range. When anti-government guerrillas aren't snatching ransom victims, they're sabotaging the cellular phone towers.
