An additional $2.3 million dollars will go to the African Rural Energy Enterprise Development (AREED AREED African Rural Energy Enterprise Development ) program, begun in 2000 by the UN Foundation and the UN Environment Programme. AREED's goal is to support entrepreneurs who can establish climate-friendly technology businesses with modest initial financing. So far, 30 businesses have been launched, providing energy services from sources including solar, wind, and biomass. The second grant of $2.1 million-will help extend the AREED approach to Brazil, where 20-40 million people in the north and northeast “Northeastern” redirects here.
