Labs, Inc., polled 1,150 enterprise software developers on a range of topics related to current projects and trends within their organizations' development teams, and found that open source technology adoption has emerged as a major initiative across the base of respondent organizations. An overwhelming majority (74.7%) of all survey respondents said that cost is not the primary reason for adopting and deploying open source software within their organization. Of the decision drivers, greater control over software code (as compared to proprietary software) was the most popular reason for choosing open source, garnering 33.1% of the respondent vote. Nearly one in every five developers chose either 'lower barrier to evaluation/use' (19.5%) or 'less vendor lock-in' (18.3%) as the top reasons for choosing open source software. Survey results also revealed that development teams have become somewhat or very distributed across geographic regions. More than a quarter (26.6%) of respondents indicated that the majority of their development teams are dispersed geographically in separate areas. Nearly half (44.1%) of respondents indicated that a quarter or more of their development team was geographically dispersed. "The driving force behind open source communities is the needs of people (members of a community, users, adopters). Proprietary efforts are driven, first and foremost, by the bottom line," said Alex Fletcher, founder of and lead analyst at Entiva Group, Inc. "It is now becoming more widely understood that open source software is adopted not only because it is freely available, but because it eliminates all artificial barriers to participation, including proprietary standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed and controlled by one company. Proprietary standards are technically de facto standards such as Microsoft's Windows and Intel's x86 chip family. Contrast with open standards. and vendor lock-in In economics, vendor lock-in, also known as proprietary lock-in, customer lock-in, lock-in is where a customer is dependent on a vendor for products and services and cannot move to another vendor without substantial switching costs, real and/or perceived. , while still providing enterprise-quality software." Even large companies in traditional industries have begun to adopt open source for reasons other than cost. In a July 18, 2006 Wall Street & Technology article, E-Trade CIO CIO: see American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. (Chief Information Officer) The executive officer in charge of information processing in an organization. Greg Framke listed open source optimization as one of the company's top three IT initiatives, sharing this about the initiative: "We're going to adopt a kind of community development philosophy. We're going to utilize the way the community develops software for E-Trade proprietary development. We're going to solve some issues about unwieldy packages and make E-Trade more nimble." E-Trade is currently working with Simula Labs to implement an enterprise build environment. "This has resulted in enterprises choosing more flexible software technologies that are based on open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced and real-time engineering, allowing faster and more reliable development, test and release of quality software products." Additional survey findings included: --81.7% of respondents said they use the open source Apache Ant project as a build tool; --68.8% of respondents indicated the use of the open source Apache Maven build automation project; --a majority of organizations (54.6%) have begun to plan for or implement a SOA project; and --just 37.3% of survey respondents indicated that their organizations are not currently implementing an SOA project in any form.
