It can be deployed in service provider central offices, Points-of-Presence or corporate data centres. The system enables the dynamic selection and delivery of dedicated broadband network services, such as high-speed Internet access, multipoint videoconferencing, streaming video, entertainment-driven traffic, and secure access to corporate networks. Deutsche Telekom chose the Cisco 6400 system for several reasons. Of importance was the Cisco 6400 system's ability to integrate with the company's internal infrastructure, which is based on the RADIUS protocol. The equipment also met stringent security and throughput requirements for supporting Internet Services. Additionally, Deutsche Telekom selected the Cisco 6400 for its ability to accommodate different client operating systems and access methods. The first phase of Deutsche Telekom's DSL service to business customers, launched in April 1999, provides "permanent Internet access" through the company's T-ATM DSL and T-Interconnect DSL services. Initial service to the residential mass market, which begins in July 1999, will deliver "high-speed Internet access" through the company's T-Online service with line speed connections of 128 Kbps upstream and 768 Kbps downstream. To roll out its initial DSL service, Deutsche Telekom will install Cisco 6400s in 8 points of presence throughout its operating area.
