) service throughout Germany. By deploying a cost-effective, high-performance broadband network using Cisco access equipment, Deutsche Telekom is fulfilling the increasing demand for high-speed Internet access.

The Cisco 6400 universal access concentrator is a scalable service gateway that enables service providers to deliver a new generation of on-demand, high speed and high-quality networking services. It can be deployed in service provider central offices, Points-of-Presence or corporate data centres. The system enables the dynamic selection and delivery of dedicated broadband network services, such as high-speed Internet access, multipoint videoconferencing, streaming video, entertainment-driven traffic, and secure access to corporate networks.

Deutsche Telekom chose the Cisco 6400 system for several reasons. Of importance was the Cisco 6400 system's ability to integrate with the company's internal infrastructure, which is based on the RADIUS protocol. The equipment also met stringent security and throughput requirements for supporting Internet Services. Additionally, Deutsche Telekom selected the Cisco 6400 for its ability to accommodate different client operating systems and access methods.

The first phase of Deutsche Telekom's DSL service to business customers, launched in April 1999, provides "permanent Internet access" through the company's T-ATM DSL and T-Interconnect DSL services. Initial service to the residential mass market, which begins in July 1999, will deliver "high-speed Internet access" through the company's T-Online service with line speed connections of 128 Kbps upstream and 768 Kbps downstream.

To roll out its initial DSL service, Deutsche Telekom will install Cisco 6400s in 8 points of presence throughout its operating area. Deutsche Telekom's DSL network will access its IP-based Cisco Powered Network(TM). Cisco Powered Network status highlights the company's focus on using intelligent IP networking to deliver enhanced connectivity and network-based applications to its customers.

"Deutsche Telekom is a market leader that has embraced the New World vision of data, voice and video on a single packet-based network," said David Gudmundson, vice president and general manager of Cisco`s DSL and Systems Software Business Unit. "The scalability and multiservice capabilities of the Cisco 6400 will allow them to take full advantage of mass-market demand for broadband services and increase revenue while delivering cost-effective, high-speed Internet access to their customers."
