to Improve Data Sharing The ability to share the same data resource with multiple applications or users. It implies that the data are stored in one or more servers in the network and that there is some software locking mechanism that prevents the same set of data from being changed by two people at the same time.

Sistina Software Sistina Software was an organization that focused on storage solutions architected around a Linux platform. They were acquired by Red Hat in December, 2003. Their two primary offerings were Global File System (GFS) and logical volume management (LVM). , the premier storage infrastructure software company delivering data-sharing solutions for enterprise and technical computing customers, today announced that T-Systems GEI GmbH has chosen Sistina Global File System(TM) (GFS) as a cornerstone of its data center. T-Systems GEI GmbH is a T-Systems division within Deutsche Telekom Deutsche Telekom AG (ISIN: DE0005557508, FWB: DTE, NYSE: DT, LSE: DEU, TYO: 9496 ) (abbreviated DTAG) is a telecommunications company headquartered in Bonn, Germany. It is the largest telecommunications company in Germany and in the EU.  AG, Europe's largest telecommunications company and a Fortune Global 100 company. T-Systems GEI GmbH selected Sistina GFS for use in its production environment, where application software for the public service, traffic and telecommunications services is developed--ultimately providing comprehensive services for Deutsche Telekom's key corporate customers.

GmbH, a German storage area network (SAN) integrator focused on application-clustering solutions for the financial, scientific computing and education sectors, to assist with the implementation of the Sistina GFS solution at T-Systems GEI. Faced with the arduous task of consolidating and managing massive amounts of data, ATIX GmbH and T-Systems GEI implemented a consolidated storage architecture running on the Red Hat Linux Red Hat Linux, assembled by Red Hat, was a popular, "middle-aged" Linux distribution (not as old as Slackware but older than Ubuntu) upon its discontinuation in 2004.[1]

The Sistina GFS data-sharing solution provided the fundamental capabilities to enable this consolidation that delivers increased performance and enhanced productivity to the development team. , T-Systems GEI has increasingly been implementing Linux throughout their data center for enterprise deployments.

"Sistina GFS provides T-Systems GEI with enterprise-class storage management functionality, as well as extremely impressive price/performance benefits," said Marcus Ketzer, the T-Systems lead IT professional for the project. "When we made the decision to implement a clustered storage architecture, we realized that we needed a file system capable of delivering concurrent read and write capabilities in order to achieve better performance. Of all the options available, we found that Sistina GFS was the proven, stable data-sharing technology we needed, providing unmatched performance, speed and shared read-write storage capabilities."

"ATIX was able to easily configure T-Systems GEI's architecture to support clustering with Sistina GFS, plus seamlessly integrate the technology across the company's servers," said Mark Hlawatschek, chief technology officer at ATIX GmbH, a Sistina reseller based in Munich, Germany. "As Linux continues to become a commodity operating system, ATIX anticipates many new opportunities for leveraging Sistina's rich data-sharing technology in conjunction with Linux for production-class data center implementations across Europe."

Specializing in Linux storage and clustering solutions for enterprise applications, ATIX works closely with partners such as Sistina and Hewlett-Packard to deliver best-of-breed clustered storage solutions. ATIX has been experiencing a strong demand for Sistina GFS technology from various industries throughout Europe including financial institutions, Internet service providers Internet service provider (ISP)

worldwide, to consolidate existing server and storage resources into a single management domain, essentially serving as the "central nervous system" in a SAN.

"Many of our customers' implementations, such as the one at T-Systems GEI, rely on Sistina to provide scalable, efficient and robust data-sharing services without crushing IT budgets," said Joaquin Ruiz, Sistina's vice president of marketing and product management. "Sistina continues to experience strong demand for its products, given that many enterprises are faced with the challenge of sharing increasing amounts of data and better utilizing their existing compute and storage assets. This has led more and more customers to adopt an 'incremental computing approach' based on industry standard Intel-based servers, Linux and SAN technologies glued together by proven data-sharing software such as Sistina GFS."

In their production environment, T-Systems GEI is running Sistina GFS on Hewlett-Packard Intel-based servers connected via a Fibre Channel SAN to Compaq StorageWorks Raid Array 8000 FC storage. These servers now provide scalable services such as NFS (Network File System) The file sharing protocol in a Unix network. This de facto Unix standard, which is widely known as a "distributed file system," was developed by Sun. See file sharing protocol and WebNFS.
