"Atlas was selected over other offerings for its high performance OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) A test instrument that analyzes the light loss in an optical fiber. Used to find faults, splices and bends in the line, it works by sending out a light pulse and measuring its reflection.  (optical time domain reflectometer (hardware) Optical Time Domain Reflectometer - A device used to perform Optical Time Domain Reflectometry. ), the functionality of its software and the ability to control a remote optical switch over the network," said Hans Sachs, Deutsche Telekom project leader. "Price was also an important factor. The Acterna system presents an excellent price-performance ratio. It ensures fast fault finding and minimum down time."

When installation is complete in autumn 2001, the Acterna remote fiber test system will be monitoring 800 dark fibers in the regions of Bayreuth, Dresden, Duren, Eschborn, Karlsruhe and Siegen.

The Acterna Atlas remote fiber test system provides 24-hour monitoring of the fiber network for early warning of problems such as network failure or cable damage. The system consists of a series of compact, remote test units (RTUs) installed at strategic points throughout the network, and a central server where data is collected and analyzed.

Powerful Atlas software provides a wide range of data analysis and network management functions.
