Detroit's Oldies 104.3 WOMC Radio Personality Gene Taylor Dies at Age 53.
DETROIT, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ --
The following was released by Oldies 104.3 WOMC:
We lost a good friend here at WOMC. All of us are very saddened at the passing of Gene Taylor, a man who touched people through his humor, love and giving spirit.
Gene and his wife, Helen, were on a late-night sleigh ride near Garland, Michigan when he suffered a severe asthma attack. Efforts early Sunday morning to revive him were unsuccessful. Gene and Helen just celebrated their wedding anniversary on New Year's Day.
In addition to his daily work on the Dick Purtan & Purtan's People morning show, Gene was busy writing a book about Michigan activities and was planning the 14th Annual Salvation Army Radiothon.
The Salvation Army was an important part of Gene's life. Gene was instrumental in the growth of the "Bed & Bread Club," the Salvation Army's daily effort to feed the hungry and homeless here in the Detroit area. Every Wednesday, Gene drove the "Bed & Bread Truck" on its familiar route. Beyond his public philanthropic activities, Gene counseled many with advice and support. Gene was a friend to everybody, with time for everyone. He really "walked the walk."
Gene hosted television talk shows in New York, Toronto and Detroit, was an Emmy-award winning writer and performed as a stand-up comic in clubs across the country. Gene did many speaking engagements for business and church groups.
Gene, 53, is survived by his wife, Helen Pasakarnis, and sons, Christian, 15, and Kelly, 22.
Details of the services will be made available when they are finalized.
