Richard John Haas (born August 29, 1936 in Spring Green, Wisconsin) is an American muralist who is best known for architectural murals and his use of the , the former director of policy planning The Director of Policy Planning is the United States Department of State official in charge of the Department's internal think tank, the Policy Planning Staff. The position of Director of Policy Planning is one of the most prestigious in the State Department, and has traditionally at the State Department, as saying, "That was the mistake which I believe is coming back to haunt the United States now."

Why was this mistake made? Because of George W. Bush's Ahab-like obsession with invading Iraq. That caused troops needed to complete the job in Afghanistan--a mission for which we had the world's support--to be diverted to carry out the invasion of Iraq--for which we have earned the world's disdain.
