In conjunction with Visit Britain and Quality in Tourism (QIT), the Association of Serviced Apartment Providers (ASAP) has won its campaign for a separate quality grading system in the serviced apartment industry - a first of its kind, not only in Europe but worldwide. Previously, there were no regulated standards for serviced apartments, meaning companies could choose to call themselves five-star properties, based on similar standards set for hotels, without an official grading. Carlson Hotels Worldwide

Carlson Hotels Worldwide has bought up additional shares in its Brussels-based partner company, Rezidor, taking its ownership from 35% to 41.7%. The 6.7% was acquired from SAS Group, which now has no remaining shares in the company. The relationship between Carlson and Rezidor was established in 1994 when the two companies set up a Master Franchise Agreement, whereby Rezidor was given the franchising rights for the Radisson brand in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This contract has since been extended to include Carlson's Regent Hotels & Resorts, Country Inns & Suites and Park Inn brands, allowing Rezidor to grow its portfolio from 29 hotels in 1994 to the 227 it operates today. Hotel ZaZa to Debut next Month. A Houston landmark since 1926, the former Warwick Hotel building will be reintroduced to Houstonians and visitors alike on June 4, 2007 as Hotel ZaZa. This will be the building's third incarnation, following its initial role as a residential hotel and later an ultra-luxury hotel property. During the latter phase, oil tycoon John Mecom Sr.'s $13- million investment in renovations made such an impact on the local community that a 1965 issue of Interior Design magazine dedicated fifteen pages to the property. Following next week's opening, the 315 hotel rooms will continue to impress, the pinnacle of which is the "Magnificent Seven" category of penthouse suites. Several of these rooms feature bathtubs on private balconies. A restaurant and bar with an outdoor terrace, 17,000 square feet in meeting facilities, an "Urban Oasis" pool, spa and fitness center all contribute to the experience at Hotel ZaZa, with a style described as "rock-star royalty meets Phantom of the Opera meets Ernest Hemingway meets Versace." Interstate Hotels & Resorts

Interstate Hotels & Resorts, one of the nation's largest independent hotel management companies, today reported that it closed on the previously announced acquisition of the 495-room Westin Atlanta Airport Hotel in Georgia for $74 million, or $149,500 per key, from an affiliate of The Blackstone Group. It is the company's largest asset acquisition and its sixth wholly-owned property under its strategic plan to diversify its revenue base through increased real estate ownership. The company will immediately begin its planned $18 million renovation, to include all rooms and public areas. May 30, 2007

Leela Hotels

Leela Hotels to Double Capacity in India. In a bid to capitalize on India[yen]s current economic boom, the Indian-owned and -operated luxury hotel group Leela Palaces Hotels and Resorts will more than double its properties in just three years. Plans are currently in place to open new properties in South Delhi (spring 2008), Udaipur (winter 2008), Chennai (winter 2009), Hyderabad (2010) and Pune (2010). The total investment is $300 million. Marriott UK & Ireland has seen a dramatic rise in inquiries for conferences and events since introducing improved functionality and additional features on its dedicated meeting planner website. Marriott has introduced a complimentary, customized web page devoted to each individual event - similar to Hilton's recently introduced worldwide POG offering (click here to read more) - which allows planners to upload travel directions, conference program, corporate logo and photography. Marriott guarantees a response to all online RFPs (request for proposals) within 24 hours (business days), with all requests sent direct to the hotel's lead management system rather than via email to help ensure a fast response. The Paris Marriott Rive Gauche Hotel & Conference Centre brings the company's portfolio in the city to eight. In keeping with Marriott's policy of not adding its name to a hotel until renovations are complete - as is the case with London's Grosvenor House, which gains its JW Marriott title next year after some [pounds sterling]100m ($199m) in refurbishments - the Rive Gauche has actually operated as a Marriott since its acquisition in March 2006. Guest room amenities include 24-hour room service and high speed wi-fi internet access, in addition to facilities such as a concierge, Elite lounge, parking and a beauty salon. May 30, 2007

The company is also to bring its first Courtyard property to Hong Kong later this year, located on the harbour front in the Sai Ying Pan district. It now operates some 700 properties worldwide and is extending into new markets such as the Middle East, Asia and Europe, with minor brand moderations to suit each local market. Marriott will add its third Courtyard hotel to the greater Shanghai region next year, with the Courtyard by Marriott Hangzhou City Centre, which will be joined by a JW Marriott in 2009. Both 330-room hotels will be situated in Hangzhou's central business district as part of an 80,000sq m (262,667sq ft) complex. May 30, 2007
