Dessie Stewart.

Byline: Newton EMERSON

JUST what does it take to get thrown out of the DUP DUP (in Northern Ireland) Democratic Unionist Party ? Recent years have seen the Party of God failing to damn members with loyalist connections, criminal convictions and even sexual offence records.

In Ballymena, one councillor alone has insulted the family of murdered teenager Michael McIlveen, described a Catholic housing estate as "a foreign ghetto" and returned a friendship plaque from local Muslims because "I do not believe in the Islamic faith".

Now Coleraine councillor and former mayor Dessie Stewart has admitted to four counts of electoral fraud Electoral fraud is illegal interference with the process of an election. Acts of fraud tend to involve affecting vote counts to bring about a desired election outcome, whether by increasing the vote share of the favored candidate, depressing the vote share of the rival candidates,  involving postal and proxy ballots. But the DUP has merely promised to "review and adjudicate adjudicate (jōō´dikāt´),
v
" the situation while leaving Councillor Stewart in office.

This is completely unacceptable from any political party, especially one that is currently lecturing the rest of us on democracy and the rule of law. The DUP must expel Councillor Stewart at once.
