Austin's Bikinis Bar and Grill Pushes for National Holiday

AUSTIN, Texas -- On July 5, 1946 the modern bikini made its international debut. In honor of the bikini's impact on American popular culture, Austin-based Bikinis Bar and Grill is calling for a national day of recognition.

What has now become standard beachwear caused quite a stir when the first bikini was seen pool side. The modern bikini is credited to French engineer Louis Reard and fashion designer Jacques Heim. It was named after Bikini Atoll Bikini Atoll (also known as Pikinni Atoll) is an uninhabited 6.0-square-kilometer atoll in one of the Micronesian Islands in the Pacific Ocean, part of Republic of the Marshall Islands. "Every fashion museum has a bikini in its collection, but there is not an official day of recognition. In honor of its impact, Bikinis Bar and Grill is declaring July 5 as National Bikini Day and we're opening our collection of vintage swim suits and memorabilia for all to enjoy," said Guller.

To honor the 61st birthday of the bikini, Bikinis Bar and Grill will have a collection of vintage bikinis on display. Additionally, the sports bar will offer specials all day and patrons wearing a bikini top will receive free beer.
