DeskStation and Beame & Whiteside Team Up to Offer Novell Resellers Real Gold with Windows NT Integration Solution.

LENEXA, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 1994--DeskStation Technology, Inc., and Beame & Whiteside Software today announced a new program through which authorized DeskStation resellers will receive a free demonstration copy of BW-MultiConnect for Windows NT.

Beame & Whiteside's Windows NT server software, which gives Novell NetWare users seamless access to Windows NT file and print resources, will be offered with every DeskStation Tyne Server R4600 RISC-based computing system.

"BW-MultiConnect combined with DeskStation's fast, open architecture RISC PC systems provides Novell Server capabilities with a migration path to the powerful client/server capabilities of the Microsoft Windows NT operating system," said Joe Panther, Reseller Manager for DeskStation. "This is a winning combination of hardware and software that makes it easy for resellers to add support for their installed NetWare customers with the enhancements offered by Windows NT."

"We developed BW-MultiConnect using our own IPX/SPX See IPX.  stack because we recognized that NetWare users would naturally want to integrate Windows NT into their environments," said George Stevenson, Product Manager for Beame & Whiteside.

"Novell users are only beginning to experiment with integration strategies to incorporate Windows NT into their installed NetWare systems. With BW-MultiConnect, they can load one software solution on their Windows NT servers and give NetWare clients instant and seamless access to Windows NT files."

By bundling BW-MultiConnect with DeskStation's Tyne workstation, resellers can offer customers a high-performance platform for Windows NT that can supplement their existing NetWare networks. The Tyne's MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second.  R4600 microprocessor delivers fast Windows NT performance, and BW-MultiConnect allows NetWare users to seamlessly access files and print services supported on the Tyne RISC RISC

 system.

This means customers can preserve their investment in Novell NetWare and still add Windows NT. The two operating systems can continue to co-exist indefinitely, or the user can use the Tyne platform to begin migration to Windows NT.

Beame & Whiteside's BW-MultiConnect for Windows NT server software gives NetWare 3.x clients running DOS and/or Windows 3.x seamless access to Windows NT by adding the SPX/IPX See IPX.  protocol stack and NCP (1) (Network Control Program) See SNA and network control program.

 server functions to Windows NT.

BW-MultiConnect will support any hardware platform capable of supporting Windows NT, and is implemented as a set of loadable Windows NT drivers, so no additional software is required on NetWare client workstations. Windows NT connectivity is at the kernel level so it's fast and seamless.

The process (the noun) is a "logout" or "logoff," while the act of doing it (the verb) is to "log out" or to "log off." See login. , SLIST, MAP, and ATTACH, which are similar to their NetWare counterparts, so that BW-MultiConnect for Windows NT can operate without other NetWare servers on the LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. . A programmer's library of API calls is also included.

When bundled with DeskStation's Tyne RISC system, BW-MultiConnect delivers the same connectivity speed as native NetWare. The Tyne Server R4600 is the ideal hardware platform to support Windows NT's 32-bit server applications, e.g. database, file/print, remote, and gateway services. DeskStation's unique LogiCore architecture provides a high-bandwidth communication channel between the processor, memory, and secondary cache subsystems. It also features an industry-standard VESA/ISA bus to support standard peripherals with superior server performance.

The Tyne Server R4600 comes with 2 Mbytes of cache memory and memory, disk, network, and SCSI SCSI

"The benefits of the DeskStation/Beame & Whiteside program from the customer's point of view is an easy migration from a Novell-only environment to an NT-based environment so that they can enjoy the benefits of Windows NT," said Tim Tritt, President of Sumit Computer Group, a Novell Gold Reseller based in Oklahoma.

now. A high percentage of our customers are interested in NT. However, we are being cautious in how we pursue this. We haven't said 'You have to move to NT' to our Novell customers. We have talked about the features of NT and the strengths and weaknesses of Novell. After demonstrating Windows NT 3.5, our customers are ecstatic."

Tritt estimated that 60 to 80 percent of his Novell customers are interested in Windows NT, and that their first exposure to the operating system is through the DeskStation/Beame & Whiteside program. Tritt also sees that offering BW-MultiConnect on the Tyne Server R4600 offers resellers an opportunity to differentiate themselves from the mainstream PC stores.

"Windows NT is new, and the excellent characteristics of DeskStation's Tyne combined with BW-MultiConnect allow for a greater margin than NetWare," Tritt added. "For resellers looking for a niche where there is a lot of interested and the opportunity to enjoy a good profit margin, this program is well worth considering."

The DeskStation Tyne server and desktop systems are available for prices beginning at $5,700 and up, depending on configuration. Core systems are available to resellers.

BW-MultiConnect for Windows NT is available at different levels beginning at $495 for five-user license ranging to $9,695 for an unlimited user license.
