Scarano & Associates Architects has completed the design of the first new building to be built in 100 years at the base of the Manhattan Bridge The Manhattan Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the East River in New York City, connecting Lower Manhattan (at Canal Street) with Brooklyn (at Flatbush Avenue Extension). , 133 Water Street, a 12-story, mixed-use condominium condominium

Designed by Scarano's Charles Diehl, the street frontage of the building will be composed of concrete, a material that is contextual with the 1904 warehouses built by the Gair family throughout the area.

The glass portion of 133 Water Street, primarily comprising the top eight floors, turns the mass of the structure at an angle to match the Manhattan Bridge, creating unique and varied vistas from the condominium units. In addition, the project calls for triple-glazed glass curtain walls curtain wall

"We paid close attention to the architectural styles of the area," points out Mr. Scarano. "We didn't believe Manhattan-style modernism modernism, in religion, a general movement in the late 19th and 20th cent. that tried to reconcile historical Christianity with the findings of modern science and philosophy.  would be appropriate here, but rather a design that could celebrate the historic qualities of the neighborhood, while taking advantage of potentially remarkable vistas. What we have created is a beautiful, graceful structure that, literally, reflects today's DUMBO."

The plans for the 133 Water Street include underground parking, first floor commercial spaces and 52 residential units.

Construction of 133 Water Street, developed by the Guttman family is underway, with completion scheduled for early 2006. The interiors are being designed by Andres Escobar and the marketing will be through The Developers Group.

Moreover, two blocks away at Water Street in nearby Vinegar Hill Vinegar Hill could refer to:

  • The Battle of Vinegar Hill, an engagement during the Irish Rebellion of 1798
, Scarano & Associates has recently completed the design of a second residential project.

A gut renovation and addition to two attached buildings, comprising a four-story 1902 wood structure with a contiguous 1950's concrete structure, the architects have proposed a four-story glass and steel addition, two separate entry lobbies, center courtyard and 83space below ground parking lot.
