) announced today the availability of its IrDA Control (standard) IrDA Control - (IrDA-C, formerly IrBUS) Infrared standard from IrDA. IrDA Control is a low speed communication standard that allows cordless peripherals such as keyboards, mice, game pads, and joysticks to interact with intelligent host devices.  Peripheral Engine and its Host Control with USB USB

In popular usage, it is said that data communications make it possible for one computer to "talk" with another.  interfaces.

The IrDA is a non-profit international organization established in 1993 for establishing open IR standards to ensure interoperability and compatibility between a variety of devices from any manufacturer.

"IR connections have become commonplace on most of today's computers and PDAs, and many of these are IrDA compliant," explained Robert Stuart For the explorer by the same name, see .

Major Robert Stuart (c.1812 – June 17, 1901) was an officer of the British Army and veteran of the Crimean War.
, IrDA Product Manager. "We're seeing more of these being designed into set-top boxes and consumer products as well."

Peripheral Engine Evaluation Kit is a support tool to help designers develop IrDA-Control compliant peripheral devices. Included in the package are a PC-based evaluation board and sample software for enabling observation and capture of IrDA-Control infrared communication data packets. This tool may also be used as an engineering reference for the development of user peripheral device software.

The kit includes a Printed Wiring Board on which an infrared transceiver (Sharp GP2W2001YK) and Sharp IrDA-Control Peripheral engine are mounted, an RS232C PC interface board and software for a keyboard emulation program.

With this kit it is possible to implement an IrDA Control Host device to which up to eight wireless peripherals, such as mice and keyboards in a PC environment, can be connected.

The kit includes the LZ85202 communication controller with a USB card to interface with a PC, all required functions for IrDA Control communication, an optimized interface to the Sharp IrDA Control Transceiver (GP2W2001YK) and an optimized USB transceiver to LSI LSI: see integrated circuit.

interface. It can be used as a known good host when designing keyboards, mice and gamepad products.

"IR is much more economical to implement when compared to many available RF connection options, and offers a secure link with fewer interference problems. IR also maintains its own specifications, which makes support much easier for designers and manufacturers. Millions of working products are in use everyday," Stuart explained.

Sejin America has used SMA controllers and transceivers in the design of their Wireless Freeboards and found that, "Our customers are excited about the products and Sharp's technology. This is a cost effective solution for our customers," said Nick Roche, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Sejin America.

Both kits are available for $99 each. Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas offers a full line of IrDA transceivers and actively participates in IrDA standardization work. Sharp has played a leading role in the IrDA Consortium from its beginning, when it had just 40 members. Today, more than 130 companies participate in standardization activities.
