Design team serves up a winner.


The Washington Metro City Center Chapter of the International Interior Design Association has awarded its 2004 Bronze Award-Hospitality to BBGM Interiors for its design of Palette restaurant.

The award, which recognizes members of the IIDA IIDA International Interior Design Association
IIDA Integrated Icing Diagnostic Algorithm
IIDA Intercollegiate/Interscholastic Dressage Association
 for 'leadership in a project representing extraordinary achievement in the practice of interior design,' was given at a reception on May 5.

Palette's design team included Mark Boekenheide, Carlos Meyer, Laura Trussell, Peder Sulerud and Ying Lam.

The facade of the 190-seat restaurant is wrapped in sandblasted glass panels punctuated by randomly placed squares of clear glass. The glowing glass box establishes a distinct identity for the restaurant on the comer com·er

Palette's contemporary decor, inspired by the restaurant's name, includes a rotating selection of artwork from The Americas suspended within sheets of glass throughout the space. The restaurant has been envisioned as ah art gallery where the people and food are showcased by the contemporary design, as is the artwork.

The bar's rectangular communal table echoes the shapes 'cut out' in the windows, while intimate seating with sofas and sculptural tables is available on a raised rectangular platform beneath the M Street windows. Suspended light fixtures with frosted glass Frosted glass is produced by the acid etching of clear sheet glass, or sand-blasting. It has the effect of rendering the glass translucent, obscuring the view while still passing light.

Applications:
  • To obtain visual privacy while admitting light.
 shades above the bar and a series of long thin metal wall sconces on each column create the right mood as day turns to evening.

The raised platform established in the bar continues throughout the dining area, creating visual interest as well as more intimate setting for small parties. Frosted glass balustrades and perforated per·fo·ra·ted
