THE humble coat hanger has inspired a star student to a national gong.

Northumbria University Northumbria University is a modern university located in Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England. Schools
Northumbria offers approximately 500 study programmes through nine Schools:
  • Applied Sciences
  • Arts and Social Sciences
  • Built Environment
 third year Design for Industry student Simon Daniel, 21, created 'Coathanger' - a piece of urban furniture.

The steel wire structure uses the repetition of the coat hanger form to create a seating platform. Available in pieces, the bench can be formed to fit any space.

Simon's concept won him a pounds 7,500 cash award from the RSA - the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, and the Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers The Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers alias Wire Workers is one of the Livery Companies of the City of London. Tin craftsmen were originally part of the Ironmongers' Company, while the wire workers, who made wire objects such as cages, animal traps and fishhooks, .

Simon said: "The award has given me a fantastic opportunity to further my skills in design."

Simon is currently undertaking a six-month internship with GRO GRO Guerrero (Estado de México)
