Des Moines makes the switch to soy. (FYI News & Notes).
The City of Des Moines Des Moines, city, United StatesDes Moines (dĭ moin`), city (1990 pop. 193,187), state capital and seat of Polk co., S central Iowa, at the junction of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers; inc. as Fort Des Moines in 1851, chartered as Des Moines in 1857., Iowa, will soon be fueling its vehicles and equipment with soy biodiesel, thanks to a donation made by the Polk County Farm Bureau. Martha Kimberly, Polk County Farm Bureau president, presented a $1,000 check to Des Moines Mayor Preston Daniels to cover the additional cost of the B2 blend. "It's a win-win for the City of Des Moines and for Iowa's soybean growers," says William Stowe, public works director for the city. "This sends a message to other large cities that soy biodiesel is a very dependable, alternative fuel. It's a boost to the economy by supporting Iowa's farmers, less dependence on foreign oils and protects the taxpayers' investment of city equipment."
