DERRY CITY Derry City can refer to:

 last night claimed they cancelled a friendly against Celtic at 48 hours notice rather than be accused of misleading the public.

But the match was called off on Friday night when Derry chairman Pat McDade refused to go ahead after failing to recognise one name in the Celtic squad.

McDade said: "We weren't expecting Celtic's most formidable team. But we couldn't take on an under-age side and charge money for it.

"We're a community-based club and we rely heavily on the people who support us. Better to wait until Celtic's commitments allow them to send a stronger team to Derry.

"I don't think Celtic wanted the match postponed because they'd already made travelling arrangements but it would've been a step too far for us. We had to understand each other's position."

The match was intended as a fund raiser A Fund Raiser' is an organized event, attempting to collect money. The money to be collected is usually for a specific item or need. The event also can entail gimmicks or activities to promote donor interest.  for the cashstrapped Irish club, who also sold Niall McGinn to Celtic.

Kenny said: "It had been advertised as part of Paddy's deal.We could've been accused of misleading the public if we said we were playing a recognisable Celtic side.

"We knew the game was on a weekend when international matches were being played, but still thought Celtic could have provided seven or eight players known to the public."
