" and "burn him, burn the bearded witchman!" Quite simply, he's the one illusionist capable of making viewers put aside their cynicism and, well, let themselves be utterly freaked out by a chap who may well be a demon.

And now he's out to shock us once again in one of his most extravagant feats of illusion yet.

The show reveals how the American and Russian governments spent millions of dollars in the 1960s on research into the principle of remote viewing: the ability to see and describe an object that is hidden from view. R

In the third of The Events (Channel 4, 9pm), Derren puts this theory to the test on a grand scale.

Derren performs an ambitious nationwide experiment - with viewers able to text and email their results. In this programme he attempts to project a single image into all of our minds.

At the end of the show, the image itself will be revealed, to see how it compares to the one produced by viewers. And chances are high that, within the hour, Facebook and Twitter A Web site and service that lets users send short text messages from their cellphones to a group of friends. Launched in 2006, Twitter (www.twitter.com) was designed for people to broadcast their current activities and thoughts.  will be full of phrases like "he's the devil!" "The series is based on the idea of performing for an audience, and doing quite high-concept stunts in each episode," he said. "So the series is four one-hour episodes, and each one of those hours is very multi-layered. There are some elements that are pre-recorded, some elements of the programme are live, some elements are with an audience in a theatre, and they all lead to a big single event in each episode."
