: This sequel to ``Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl'' jumps into the action when Captain Jack Sparrow Jack Sparrow is a fictional character in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. He was introduced in (2003) and appeared in the back-to-back sequels, (2006) and (2007), where he was portrayed by Johnny Depp.  (Johnny Depp John Christopher Depp II[1] (born June 9 1963) is an American actor. ) discovers a key. As it turns out, Sparrow owes an unpaid debt to a certain other captain, known as Davy Jones Davy Jones, personification or spirit of the sea. The name is best known in the expression "Davy Jones's locker," meaning the bottom of the sea, to which drowned sailors go.  (Bill Nighy

). Sparrow must quickly find a way to repay it, or it will be his soul to pay. The key, Davy Jones, Sparrow and, of course, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) all bump into each other at one point in the movie, making for an interesting adventure.

The bottom line: "Dead Man's Chest" has not lost the thrills and amusement found in the first movie. But disappointingly, this sequel acts as a to-be-continued prequel pre·quel

 to some future third installment.

The good stuff: Depp has not lost his touch. He still plays the swaggering, drunken Captain Jack to perfection. The other acting was very good too, but overshadowed by Depp's original and humorous performance. The film is thrilling and exciting, and the music maintains a thread of anticipation throughout.

The other stuff: As the movie trudges forward, several subplots surface. And while the viewer would like to see these story lines collide at the end, they never really do. The movie is like one of those thrilling chapters in a novel, dropping you off suddenly. But whereas a reader can simply turn the page to continue to the next chapter, filmgoers will have to wait 10 months for ``Pirates of the Caribbean 3'' to get answers - a bit disappointing.

The details: Directed by Gore Verbinski. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of adventure violence, including frightening images. Playing at Cinema World and Cinemark.

The final grade: B
