Deployment Plans Mark Europe as New Fiber-to-the-Home Hotspot, Says ABI Research.

OYSTER BAY Oyster Bay, uninc. area (1990 pop. 6,687) of the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau co., SE N.Y., on N Long Island, on Long Island Sound; settled 1653. It is chiefly residential. , N.Y. -- Recent announcements by the cities of Amsterdam and Paris that they plan to deploy pilot fiber-to-the-home networks have been reinforced by a similar declaration two days ago from France Telecom. Deutsche Telekom Deutsche Telekom AG (ISIN: DE0005557508, FWB: DTE, NYSE: DT, LSE: DEU, TYO: 9496 ) (abbreviated DTAG) is a telecommunications company headquartered in Bonn, Germany. It is the largest telecommunications company in Germany and in the EU.  had already indicated last year that it was making FTTH (Fiber To The Home) See FTTP.  plans, and several big initiatives are under consideration in Spain.

"FTTH has been seen as a big draw in North America and Japan," notes Michael Arden, principal analyst of broadband and multimedia research at ABI Abi (ā`bī) [short for Abijah], in the Bible, King Hezekiah's mother.

Research. "Now, with the Europeans talking about connecting hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of homes, Europe is becoming a hotspot."

Why Europe, and why now? "Europe has been seeing a lot of IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) Also called "TV over IP," IPTV delivers scheduled TV programs and video-on-demand (VOD) via the IP protocol and digital streaming techniques used to watch video on the Internet.  and 'telco TV' growth -- it is taking off there far faster than in North America, and is offering more sophisticated services than in Asia," says Arden. "As demand for TV technology increases, so must the capacity and capabilities of the access technology. Operators and equipment vendors are increasingly interested in this market because they see IPTV starting to gain more and more traction."

Indeed, a number of large equipment makers have recently thrown their hats in the FTTH ring. Siemens, for example, brought out a PON (Passive Optical Network) An optical point-to-multipoint access network. There are no optical repeaters or other active devices in a PON, hence the name "passive.  solution during 2005, because it was getting involved with IPTV and wanted to be able to address it from end to end. Nortel, Fujitsu and Siemens are all examples of large vendors who recognize that they have to provide more than just one piece of equipment; they must have an overall package.

What will spell success for these vendors? What threats exist? On one hand, all players in the FTTH market are potentially threatened by further technical improvements in DSL DSL

, France Telecom and other large telcos around the world are getting involved, their existing equipment suppliers -- including the big vendors named above -- will in the longer term have the better market position.

The 2006 edition of ABI Research's study, "The Worldwide FTTH Market, and IPTV" probes the link between video and FTTH deployments, the growth in FTTH subscribers, cost analysis of deploying FTTH, the impact of carrier-grade Ethernet technology on FTTH, and the market value of FTTH equipment sales. It is included in several of the company's subscription services, the "IP Video Research Service", the "Home Networking Research Service", and the "Digital Media Distribution and Management Research Service".
