Department of Defense news release (June 17, 2005): Architect of Air Force space and missile programs dies.


Retired Gen. Bernard Adolph Schriever General Bernard Adolph Schriever (September 14, 1910–June 20,2005) was born in Bremen, Germany, and after immigrating to the United States, played a major role in the U.S. Air Force programs for space and ballistic missile research. , widely regarded as the father and architect of the Air Force space and ballistic bal·lis·tic

In 1959, General Schriever assumed command of Air Research and Development Command, which became Air Force Systems Command on April 1, 1961, under a reorganization initiated by him. He was promoted to full general in 1961 and retired in 1966.
