Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced today that the
president has nominated nom·i·nate tr.v. nom·i·nat·ed, nom·i·nat·ing, nom·i·nates 1. To propose by name as a candidate, especially for election.
2. To designate or appoint to an office, responsibility, or honor. Army Maj. Gen. Robert T. Dail for appointment to
the rank of lieutenant LIEUTENANT. This word has now a narrower meaning than it formerly had; its true meaning is a deputy, a substitute, from the French lieu, (place or post) and tenant (holder). Among civil officers we have lieutenant governors, who in certain cases perform the duties of governors; (vide, the general and assignment as deputy commander, U.S.
