Two jazz concerts are among the four events in the coming week at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance, 961 E. 18th Ave.

UO Jazz Ensembles

with trumpeter Ron Miles

Tonight, Beall Hall

Denver trumpeter Ron Miles will play with UO student jazz ensembles and with a UO faculty lineup during an 8 p.m. concert in Beall Hall tonight.

The Oregon Jazz Ensemble will perform three pieces with Miles, including two works written by UO students especially for this performance: `Jazz Ensemble No. 3' by Justin Morell, and `The Size of It, the Color' by Doug Detrick.

Three jazz combo pieces - written by students David Swigart, Ben Darwish and Josh Deutsch - also will be performed with Miles.

The program will conclude with Miles joining five members of the UO jazz faculty, performing some of Miles originals. Faculty members include Steve Owen and Idit Shner, saxophones; Mike Denny, guitar; Toby Koenigsberg, piano; and Tyler Abbott, bass.

Miles is a staple of the Denver jazz scene. He also works as a music professor at Metropolitan State College there. He plays festivals and venues around the world, and has worked with performers such as Bill Frisell, Madeleine Peyroux, Don Byron, the Ellington Orchestra and Fred Hess' Boulder Creative Music Ensemble.

Tickets are $7, $5 for students and senior citizens, at the door.

Room 178 of the Music School

The School of Music's Jazz Cafe presents its final evening of jazz combos at 8 p.m. in Room 178 of the music school.

Five student combos will perform, including one ensemble of five guitars. The program includes music by George Gershwin, Sonny Rollins and Paul Desmond, as well as some original student compositions.

Tickets are $7, $5 for students and senior citizens, at the door. Light refreshments will be on sale.

Master Classes with musicians

from the Philadelphia Orchestra

Sunday, Beall Hall and

Room 186 of the Music School

Two principals from the Philadelphia Orchestra will give free master classes Sunday afternoon before the orchestra's performance at the Hult Center that evening.

Bassoonist Danny Matsukawa and hornist Jennifer Montone will be the featured teachers. Admission is free. The public is welcome to observe as the artists work with UO student musicians.

Matsukawa's bassoon master class will be at 3 p.m. in Room 186 of the music building.

Montone's horn master class will be at 4 p.m. in Beall Hall.

Chamber Music on Campus

Wednesday, Beall Hall

Student chamber ensembles will perform at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall.

Admission is free.

The program includes a wind septet by Paul Hindemith; a Fantasie for piano, four-hands by Franz Schubert; a quintet for piano and strings by Robert Schumann; `Fripperies' for horn quartet by Lowell Shaw; a violin-viola duet by W.A. Mozart; a string quartet by Johannes Brahms; David Maslanka's `Wind Quintet No. 3' and Schubert's famous piano quintet, `The Trout.'
